Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
A minimally invasive surgery is usually a laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is a progressive technique, which is conducted through a few small incisions and a camera mounted on the end of a thin tube. The doctor uses specially designed, long, narrow instruments, inserted into the body through thin tubes to complete the procedure, inside of the body. Generally, incisions are made around the navel. Patients heal much quicker and with reduced internal and external scarring following minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopy is generally conducted under general anesthesia and carbon dioxide is used to expand the patient’s abdomen which allows the doctor to see the internal structures clearly.
What is Robotic Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?
Robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive alternative surgery to full abdominal hysterectomy. The surgery is considered robotic because the doctors at The Women’s Health Center use a computer to control the surgical tools allowing for increased precision. The procedure is completed through three or four small incisions that are placed around the abdomen giving the robotic tools access to the uterus. The tools are used to dissect the uterus into small pieces which are then extracted through the small incision.
What is Robotic Laparoscopic Myomectomy?
Robotic laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgery that is used to remove uterine fibroids. The procedure uses a computer with 3-D imaging and computer-controlled surgical tools. The surgery is performed in a surgical clinic with general anesthesia. If you have uterine fibroids, you should discuss your treatment options in detail with your doctor at The Women’s Health Center to determine if robotic laparoscopic myomectomy is the best treatment for you.
What is Hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy is used to look inside a woman’s uterus to check for any abnormalities. The doctor uses a thin tool known as a hysteroscope which is gently inserted through the cervix into the uterus. The hysteroscope has a light and camera which allows the doctor to see the lining on a monitor. This can be done to determine the cause of abnormal bleeding, to see if a problem in the uterus is preventing pregnancy, to remove growths in the uterus such as fibroids or polyps, and occasionally to perform a biopsy, where a sample of the tissue is taken
What Are the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery is just as effective, but often safer, than traditional open surgery. Another benefit is recovery and healing following a minimally invasive procedure are usually faster. Minimally invasive surgeries result in less scarring and patients usually experience less pain during recovery than they would following open surgery.
